Islamorada Fishing Report – January 11, 2011

The weather has continued to stay absolutely perfect!  Keys fishing has been good as both the “Pretty Work” and “That’s Right” managed to fish a few days this week. Captain Clyde fished the Key Largo Sail Fish Tournament and did a great job.  On Saturday they went 4 for 6 and managed to be in a tie for second place.  Sunday was a little different with a much slower bite as they only saw two and caught one.  The bite was just a little better the second day but it turned out to be up to the North end of the Boundary which was too far for the boats to the South.  My friend Captain Nick won with nine fish.

“That’s Right” managed to do some good old fashioned charter fishing over the weekend and the fishing was great. The bait was easy as both the Cigar minnows and the Ballyhoos were plentiful.  We managed to do well with the snappers; a little tough on the conditions with the current into the wind but it all came together for us. There was also some nice patch Muttons mixed in with the Yellowtails as well as a few Porgies.  The King mackerel bite is crazy, as fast as bait hits the water at some spots. There are not very many big ones yet, soon though as most are from 6 to 15 pounds.

The Islamorada backcountry fishing has been hit or miss as the water is still a little bit cold. However, Captain Jeff has managed a few trips back there and he reports that things are slow with some small Redfish and still plenty of Trout. He did make mention of seeing a few large Black Drum too. The Lady Fish and Jacks are providing most of the action.

Finally, two things; first I’m getting ready to open the books up for Ocean City, Md. so please be sure to get your dates in early.  To many of you who missed out last season the calendar is filling in so get your date before it’s too late!  Second, we are running a special four person fishing package from now until Feb. 11th for just $750/person.    Take advantage and get out of the SNOW!
